The eCVT can be operated at its most efficient speed to either charge the batteries or propel the vehicle because it does not work with fixed gear ratios. Transmission Light – What Is It? And What Does It Mean? How Does eCVT Work? Does Not Work with Fixed Gear Ratios These technological innovations produced a transmission system capable of moving a vehicle forward or backward using a changeover mechanism combined with simple hydraulic control valves. One car manufacturer, Subaru, developed an eCVT that combines the steel belt drive system that uses standard synchromeshes with a magnetic powder clutch that is electronically controlled. Not satisfied with the benefits of the CVT, car makers developed a more improved CVT – the eCVT. The development of the CVT was spurred by the quest to improve the performance of small cars and fuel economy. It runs like an automatic, but it consumes less gas. In answer to that, car manufacturers invented the CVT transmission. CVT Runs Like an Automatic Transmission But Consumes Less Gas But the evolution of the transmission system didn’t stop there because there’s one major drawback with automatic transmission – it consumes more fuel than a manual transmission. The automatic transmission was invented to make driving easier. ![]() It is the transmission itself that chooses the gears as the vehicle is being driven. If you consider their names, it would appear that they are similar.īoth transmissions can be automatic since the driver does not need to shift the gears physically. As you may have already guessed, its predecessor, the CVT, means Continuously Variable Transmission. eCVT and CVT MeaningĮCVT stands for Electronic Continuously Variable Transmission. It is smart because it can constantly analyze the road conditions, the driver’s input, and the vehicle’s speed to choose the most efficient gear ratio at every moment. The eCVT, as some people have described it, is a more intelligent transmission system offering an infinite number of gear ratios. Instead of using the belts and pulleys of the standard CVT, an eCVT transmission uses electric motors/generators to control the speeds of the planetary gear components. eCVT Uses Electric Motors to Control the Gear’s Speedīut there is a big difference between them. These two types of transmissions may appear to be fundamentally the same. The new eCVT has already upgraded the CVT transmission. The standard CVT transmission uses belts and pulleys to simulate the shifting of gears in regular automatic transmissions. eCVT Transmission Overview eCVT Standard CVT Transmission Uses Belts and Pulleys to Simulate the Shifting of Gears Read on to learn more about eCVT, what it is, how it works, and how it compares with CVT. As such, it is one of the transmission systems that offers the best fuel economy. The eCVT is a smart transmission system that offers an infinite number of gear ratios.Īn eCVT transmission constantly analyzes the vehicle’s speed, driver input, and engine power and chooses the most efficient gear ratio for every moment. In an eCVT transmission, instead of belts and pulleys such as those used in CVTs, electric motors are used to control the speeds of the planetary gear components. In this article, I’ll discuss eCVT – what is it? The moral factor involved in the fall of Verdun was also immense. The fortress, then, was almost isolated.įor another reason, Verdun was too near, for the comfort of the Germans, to those immense deposits of iron ore in Lorraine which they have every intention of retaining after the war. There remained only a narrow-gauge road connecting Verdun and Bar-le-Duc. Mihiel the second (leading through Châlons) was under ceaseless fire from the German artillery. Of the two main railroads linking Verdun with France, the Lérouville line was cut off by the enemy at St. For the same reasons, the French defense of Verdun as made much harder because access to the city was commanded by the enemy. Besides, Verdun was not far distant from Metz, the great German arsenal, the fountain-head for arms, food, and munitions. Mihiel, Verdun had formed a salient in the French front which was surrounded by the Germans on three sides, -northwest, east, and south, - than the rest of the French lines. Ever since the Battle of the Marne and the German offensive against St. First of all, there were the strategic advantages of the operation. Why did the Germans make their drive at Verdun, a powerful fortress defended by a complete system of detached outworks? Several reasons may be found for this. We should next examine the reasons prompting the Germans to select Verdun as the vital point, the nature of the scene of operations, and the manner in which the preparation was made. The Kaiser himself, replying toward the end of February to the good wishes of his faithful province of Brandenburg, congratulated himself publicly on seeing his warriors of the 3d Army Corps about to carry ‘the most important stronghold of our principal enemy.’ It is plain, then, that the object was to take Verdun, win a decisive victory, and start a tremendous onslaught which would bring the war to a triumphant close. At Berlin, travelers from neutral countries leaving for Paris by way of Switzerland were told that the Germans would get there first. On March 4 the Crown Prince urged his already overtaxed troops to make one supreme effort to ‘capture Verdun, the heart of France’ and General von Deimling announced to the 15th Army Corps that this would be the last battle of the war. ![]() The German press, at the beginning of the battle, treated it as a matter of secondary import, whose object was to open up free communications between Metz and the troops in the Argonne but the proportions of the combat soon gave the lie to such modest estimates, and in the excitement of the first days official utterances betrayed how great were the expectations. They staked everything on putting their adversaries out of the running by breaking through their lines, marching on Paris, and shattering the confidence of the French people. The determination with which the Germans followed out this plan and the reckless way in which they drew on their resources leave no doubt as to the importance the operation held for them. And so, in the autumn of 1915, preparations were begun on a huge scale for delivering a terrible blow in the West and dealing France the coup de grâce. The submarine campaign was counted on to keep England’s hands tied it remained, therefore, to attack and annihilate the French army. ![]() These triumphs, however, had not brought them peace, for the heart and soul of the Allies lay, after all, in the West-in England and France. To the South they had crushed Serbia’s opposition, saved Turkey, and won over Bulgaria. Galicia had been almost completely recovered, the kingdom of Poland occupied, Courland, Lithuania, and Volhynia invaded. Their offensive in the East was most fruitful. ![]() In the West, thanks to an energetic defensive, they had held firm against the Allies’ onslaughts in Artois and in Champagne. The year 1915 was rich in successes for the Germans. The Object of the Battle, and the Preparation for It Most gardeners put 2-3 seeds in each cell, but if you don’t have many seeds, just place one per cell. Green Zebra tomatoes can be grown at home from seed or can be purchased as potted seedling plants from a plant nursery. If growing from seed, order your Green Zebra tomato seeds in the winter (or early spring) and plant them indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost in your area. ![]() Growing Green Zebra Tomatoes is quite similar to growing other types of indeterminate tomatoes with long vines. “The most complex, and often superbly delicious, varieties are those that retain their green coloring when fully ripe.” Epic Tomatoes: How to Select and Grow the Best Varieties of All Time, by Craig LeHoullier How to plant Green Zebra tomatoes? You can pair it with other top-tasting varieties like Brandywine, Cherokee Purple, Sungold (another modern introduction), and Black Krim for a colorful fresh salad. The Green Zebra is therefore a favorite of chefs and tomato lovers alike. While this tomato is a new variety (1983), it manages to retain the old-fashioned tomato aroma and enhance it with a subtle astringent freshness. Yet it is not overly acidic (as might be expected from a green tomato. The taste of this tomato is crisp and zingy – almost spicy. Green Zebra tomatoes are famous for their unique flavor profile combining a rich, creamy sweetness with a fresh, tangy bite. While the fruits are not overly heavy, the vines are large and require support to keep the tomatoes off the ground. Green Zebra plants produce best when given a support structure such as a vertical tomato stake and/or an outer support cage. Vines routinely grow to be 4-6 feet long (or longer). Green Zebra tomato plants are indeterminate with long vines typical of the variety’s heirloom tomato parentage. While refining the stripes, he discovered that a darker green stripe with a regular pattern accompanied a more interesting tangy flavor, which now defines the “Green Zebra.” The tomato is now offered by many different seed companies.” Something of a legend: An interview with Tom Wagner, by Jessamyn Tuttle, Grow Northwest (2012) The stripes were added later from a plant he found while visiting an experimental garden in Ames, Iowa. “After hundreds of crosses, about a quarter of the resulting fruits were crack resistant, and he was getting a few yellow and green tomatoes in the mix. Ripe tomatoes don’t crack as easily as some other varieties. Green Zebra tomatoes are medium-sized globe-shaped tomatoes (1.5-2.5″ wide), with each fruit weighing 3-4 ounces (a quarter pound). This cultivar is also known for its complex taste, which combines a rich, creamy sweetness and a refreshing sharp/tart bite. The Green Zebra Tomato is open-pollinated, and although not yet old enough to be an heirloom tomato, it is termed “Heirloom by Descent”. Wagner used heirloom tomato cultivars to breed a new variety with a green peel, vertical stripes, and crack-resistant skin. The Green Zebra Tomato was introduced by tomato breeder Tom Wagner of Tater-Mater Seeds in 1983. This is because it connects you with a random person with whom you can connect and share feelings. Resilio Sync, formerly known as BitTorrent Sync, offers a painless and intuitive way of synchronizing folders and files across multiple devices or computers. If you run Sync again and again for several days, more of the files are becoming affected, but some still retain their original modtimes on the PC. * Each time you run this experiment, only some files get broken, not all of them. * Android filesystem modtimes for those files are indeed recent - either Sync doesn't even bother to set them on Android, or it's one of those systems where they don't stick. * There's not way to read the logs on the Android, so can't tell what happens there. (The files aren't really being changed anywhere!) * I've studied the logs on the PC side, and for all affected files, the PC discovers there are "newer versions" (higher mtime) at the Android node, downloads those and that's why local files on the PC change modtime. * I don't know if it's important that the share is encryption-supporting. * Instead of the full sync you can usually do selective sync and just select a few files, and only those will be affected. I've read elsewhere that many Android builds like to mess with modtimes and so Sync ignores file system modtimes on Android and only cares about the ones it recorded in its DB, but here it feels like it doesn't do that, maybe? Observe: modification times of some files on PC are now recent (the times when these files had initially been synced to Android). Later, UK-based On-One released the Midge Bar, which kept this oddball niche alive for a few more years.įast forward to 2009, and the Salsa Woodchipper would usher in the second and most significant wave: gravel bars, which are technically more of a happy medium between the dramatically shaped dirt-drops of old and modern road handlebars. Those who happened to find one had to pay an arm and a leg for it. Due to lack of mass adoption, they were discontinued in the early 90s and became sought after by diehards. Thus, flare was born.įast forward a few years, and WTB collaborated with Specialized Bicycles to create the RM-2, a wing-shaped, dirt-drop handlebar that became one of the first production bars in this genre. They were also quite narrow, so early visionaries started bending the hooks on road handlebars outward to provide more leverage and stability. They added bigger tires and rode drop bars in the hooks (or drops) because the old road hoods weren’t that comfy or stable. Who came up with these types of bars? It all started back in the 1980s when early mountain bikers began retrofitting and modifying their road bikes to ride off-road. And considering that most people keep their hands in the drops while negotiating steep, loose, off-camber, or more technical surfaces, shallower, flared, and outswept drop extensions offer more control in this position.Ī Brief History of Dirt Drops and Gravel Bars Additional width creates a more natural position for most people (especially mountain bikers) and adds stability and leverage while climbing and descending in the hoods. In short, the consensus is that having wider bars with drops that flare outward (among other tweaks) provides more control compared to bars designed for standard road cycling, which were originally engineered for speed and efficiency. The most convincing reason to upgrade from a traditional road handlebar to a more specialized off-road drop bar is control and stability. We’ve also compiled a full list of gravel bars with complete specs and loads of photos, including some that have been reviewed. In this Gear Index guide, we’ll outline the terms that define these bars, how to differentiate among them, and the relative advantages of each. This style of handlebar is quite useful, and the range of options and variations can be mind boggling. One such component-and perhaps the one experiencing the most fluctuation and innovation at the moment-are drop handlebars, aka flared drop bars, gravel bars, or dirt-drops. With more and more people using “road” bikes for a variety of off-pavement pursuits, bike parts are quickly evolving to fit those needs. ![]() The state of that system at a particular time is given by the wave function, a solution to this equation, which can only give probabilities for the values of particular properties of the system. A quantum system, such as the electron Heisenberg was thinking of, can be described mathematically using Schrödinger's equation. The uncertainty captured in the principle is inherent in the quantum world, whether it is observed or not.Īlthough Heisenberg's uncertainty principle might seem a confusing idea, it has a simple clarity when you describe the situation mathematically. "Heisenberg's uncertainty principle is often phrased in terms of measurement, but really you should think the electron itself," says Ben Allanach, professor of theoretical physics at the University of Cambridge. Heisenberg's thought experiment might seem clear but is misleading as it could suggest that the uncertainty principle is a result only of the disturbance caused by observation (this is another phenomenon, known as the observer effect). So a gamma-ray microscope would give you a highly accurate measurement of an electron's position, but the disturbance would create a less accurate measurement of the momentum. But the energy of gamma-ray photons is so high, the collision would affect the motion, and hence the momentum, of the electron. ) Heisenberg reasoned you could very accurately measure an electron's position with a gamma-ray microscope, but to do so you have to bounce at least one gamma-ray photon off the electron. And the energy,, of a photon is given by. The speed of light is fixed at so as the wavelength decreases the frequency must increase. (This is because for waves, where is the speed of the wave, is the wavelength and is the frequency. Heisenberg suggested using a gamma-ray microscope as gamma-rays are a type of light with a very short wavelength.īut the tradeoff is that light waves with a shorter wavelength have a higher frequency, and the photons have correspondingly higher energy. The accuracy of a microscope is limited by the wavelength of the light used – the shorter the wavelength the more accurate your observations. To do this you would use a microscope which bounces photons of light of an object in order to observe it. Suppose you wanted to locate the position of an electron. Heisenberg himself tried to understand this principle physically using the following thought experiment. But the principle extends to other pairs of particles (called complementary variables), such as length of time and energy, whose connection is expressed in similar inequalities. This is the most common mathematical expression of Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, that the product of these uncertainties has a minimum value. Where is the Planck's constant (a kind of order of magnitude of the quantum world) divided by. If we write the uncertainty in a particle's position as, and the uncertainty in a particle's momentum as, then the uncertainty of these two properties is connected in the following way: (The momentum of an object is its mass times its velocity.) The uncertainty principle states that you cannot know, with absolute certainty, both the position and momentum of an electron – the more accurately you measure one of these properties the less accurate your knowledge of the other. ![]() In 1927 the German physicist, Werner Heisenberg, framed the principle in terms of measuring the position and momentum of a quantum particle, say of an electron. This quantum fuzziness lies behind one of the most famous principles of quantum physics: Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. ![]() Werner Heisenberg in 1933 (photo: German Federal Archive) |
